A Very Special Dress

When people ask me where I got my wedding dress, they usually aren’t prepared for a philanthropy speech. You see, I didn’t just go into the local boutique in Virginia Beach where I was living at the time – I found my dream dress in a hotel in another state.

My bridesmaid/roommate & I drove from the beach down to Raleigh to pick up my mom & my Maid of Honor/little sister. From there we were off to a hotel in Charlotte, N.C. that was hosting a Brides Against Breast Cancer show. No appointment, no consultations, no private dressing rooms…just a large conference room with lots of eager brides. It was not exactly a Kleinfeld’s “Say Yes to the Dress” atmosphere, but I honestly wouldn’t have wanted it any other way! With cancer affecting many of my own close family members – some of them multiple times – this organization holds a special place in my heart.

Brides Against Breast Cancer is a non-profit traveling show called the “Nation Wide Tour of Gowns.” They average over 1,500 gently used & brand new gowns per event that have been donated by designers & other brides & all sold at incredibly low prices.  The revenue goes to the Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation (similar to Make a Wish) which helps terminally ill patients and their families enjoy a happy memory during their difficult time. There are over 50 shows all over the country every year. Click here to see if there are any upcoming shows near you!

Here’s an example of how a show is typically set up:

Here’s how all these gorgeous gowns get from coast to coast!

BABC also offers gorgeous designer veils, shoes, jewelry & accessories. At some shows, the local vendors will also have tables set up with their services on display. It is truly a one stop shop!
